Since I was a kid, open-world games felt a chore to me, no matter how much I wanted to play those games. I have beat the game four times, and I appreciated the game more and more with each playthrough. I had a largely similar experience to yours. Still have Year of the Snake to run through, and I'm curious about what that'll be like. The sounds and visuals that came from all the violent melee weapons and environmental executions. The combat is the shining star, with the amount of satisfying blows, counters, and throws that all transition seamlessly between each other (these animations, man!). The dynamic of playing both cop and triad at once was also interesting. Hong Kong as a setting provides a different flavor than, say, a GTA world. Was glad to hear Lorn on it.ĭespite this, I did have fun.
I recently finished Sleeping Dogs (even got the Platinum), but have to admit that after awhile, I wondered why I was still playing. It's also nice just getting a game like this that isn't incredibly America- centric I love my country, but it's not the only one, and sometimes it's really nice to see other locales and cultures in games like this. The open stalls and neon-lined streets make it feel like every square foot has something worthy seeing. The game's version of Hong Kong may not be as expansive or free-form as Los Santos (not even close, really), but there's a density to the world of Sleeping Dogs that, imo, makes it feel much more alive and fascinating to walk through. I always thought that it was the best GTA-type game ever, until GTA V came out, and playing it again hasn't much changed my mind on that it's bloody fantastic. When I first played it, I was going through a bit of a money problem and could only play it on a pretty crappy laptop that could barely run it on lowest settings, so going through the Definitive Edition now, and being able to play it the way it was meant to be played, has been great fun.
So awhile back we had a thread announcing that we're officially getting a Sleeping Dogs movie adaptation, and it inspired me to finally go back and revisit the game.
